Denial of service graphic

Denial of service attacks suck

I said it, you read it, hope you aren’t offended.

ipHouse has 3 1Gbps links to the Internet connected to two routers and from there enters our core network at gigabits per second speed.

How do our servers connect?

This morning we had an outage and while I did what I could to describe it via text, I can’t seem to come to grips with three unrelated issues occurring together creating so many pages.

Why?

Our network is segmented/separated by multiple physical segments and these unrelated incidents should not affect the other.

Basic Network Diagram

Basic Network Diagram

This graphic representation isn’t necessarily 100% accurate as it is a logic drawing with basic network interconnections in place. The physical machines where our virtualized servers live are not represented, though there are 8 of them. The NFS servers aren’t accurate either as it is multiple active/active NFS controllers exporting 3 NFS mount points to our internal infrastructure using a storage network. There is another NFS cluster that handles the real email and web storage that isn’t depicted.

Every production machine on the ipHouse network, whether physical or virtual, has at least 2 ethernet ports. One connected to external facing services and one on an internal network where we do our storage and secure data transfers. Some systems have more though it really depends on what service the server is providing.

Twin Cities vBeers May 12, 2012

Monthly vBeers events are now in session throughout the summer and fall!

Events are normally held first Tuesday and first Saturday of each month.

The May 12th event was delayed by one week to not break our Cinco de Mayo karma.

Tuesday: Mac’s Industrial - 312 Central Ave SE, Minneapolis 55414 (usually 5:30pm-8:30pm)

Saturday: The Happy Gnome - 498 Selby Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55102 (usually 1:00pm-4:30pm)

Twin Cities vBeers April 3, 2012 (updated)

I need to get better at putting this kind of stuff up!

These events are either the first Tuesday or Saturday of the month.

Today, Tuesday, from 5:30pm until 8:30pm, we will be having our first vBeers of the year at Mac’s Industrial on Central Ave in Minneapolis, MN.

We alternate the days of the week on alternating months.

UPDATE: For May 12th, 2012 (the next event), we will be at The Happy Gnome on Dale St. in St. Paul, MN. (yes, not the first Saturday of the month but I don’t want to screw with Cinco de Mayo karma).

What is it?

Just virtualization people getting together to hang out, eat some food, drink some beverages (of which some are malt & hops based).

Addresses:

Mac’s Industrial - 312 Central Ave SE, Minneapolis 55414 (usually 5:30pm-8:30pm)

The Happy Gnome - 498 Selby Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55102 (usually 1:00pm-4:30pm)

Building a sandbox requires planning

I mean it.

6 servers (5 operational as one is crashing itself repeatedly), 2 switches, and bandwidth.

This should be easy to do! I mean: what could go wrong?
